Bloomfield Boost Program Proposal

The program’s goal is to give Bloomfield students an alternative pathway to achieving their degrees through a structured first year curriculum at Bloomfield.

Program Overview

The program would provide these students with a core curriculum of 29 credits designed to fulfill foundational requirements while preparing them for future academic success in the institution of their choosing. The program leverages Bloomfield’s proven ability to take students who need additional support and transform them into confident, capable scholars. These scholars might include

  • Students who are conditionally admitted
  • Undeclared students who require more time to pick a major

Program Requirements and Support:

  • Students must maintain a 2.00 or above GPA to remain in the program.
  • Designated advisors will provide personalized support for these students.
  • Conditionally Admitted Students must complete 2 academic coaching sessions and 2 writing support sessions throughout the Fall semester.
  • If students earn less than 2.0 GPA at the end of the Fall semester, they must continue in Bloomfield Boost in the Spring semester. Spring semester Bloomfield Boost students must complete 2 academic coaching sessions. Additionally, students must enroll in and complete IDS 165: BC Academic Notice Support.
  • Students who attend class regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. Instructors are responsible for developing specific policies and guidelines regarding attendance, and these must be explained in the syllabus, along with all other course requirements. Students are responsible for following these requirements and guidelines. Students are responsible for making class sessions a priority, and for managing absences effectively by communicating with instructors and completing assignments following the course syllabus.
  • Upon successful program completion, students will continue their education at Bloomfield to pursue their chosen degree.

Students would complete the following coursework:

Fall Term (16 credit hours):

  • WRT 105: Argument and Analysis (Effective Writing II) (4 credits)
  • MTH 131: Understanding Data in Social, Health and Creative Contexts (SEEDS: Quantitative Reasoning) (3 credits)
  • First-Year Seminar (3 credits)
  • In consultation with the student’s advisor, 6 credit hours of SEEDS coursework or courses required for the student’s major

Spring Term (only for students who are conditionally admitted and fall below a 2.00 GPA in the Fall term; 13 credit hours):

  • WRT 109: Advanced Composition (3 credits) – includes participation in Spring Symposium
  • IDS 165: BC Academic Notice Support (1 credit): REQUIRED
  • In consultation with the student’s advisor, 9 credit hours of SEEDS coursework or courses required for the student’s major
