Dr. Neddie Serra wins NJNS IMPACT Award

Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing chairperson Dr. Neddie V. Serra received a prestigious nursing honor on Feb. 20, as the program leader was honored with the New Jersey Nursing Students, Inc. (NJNS) IMPACT Award in a ceremony at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J.

“I feel very honored to be nominated for this award, and to win it,” Serra said of the honor.  “It is very rewarding to feel that you have impacted the life of any student, and helped towards achieving their goal of becoming a professional nurse.  That is why we do what we do as educators.”

New Jersey Nursing Students, Inc. (NJNS) is a pre-professional organization representing the nursing students of New Jersey.  Its goal is to help the future professionals of nursing by aiding in the transition from student to professional nurse.  One of the largest constituents in the National Students Nursing Association (NSNA), NJNS has close to 1,000 student members who are taking advantage of programs, services, product discounts, and leadership opportunities.

Given to individuals in the nursing profession who go above and beyond make an impact in the lives of students, Dr. Serra is the first member of Bloomfield’s nursing division to receive the IMPACT Award.  The head of the program was an easy choice for a nomination from NJNS legislation director Jacqueline Hunterton-Anderson, a 2015 BSN candidate at Bloomfield.

“Dr. Serra is a unique individual, who is caring and a great example of what true leadership should be,” she said.  “She leads by example, and I hope that one day I may be able to inspire students like she does every day.”

The chair of Bloomfield’s nursing division since 2004, Dr. Serra has been educating future nurses for nearly 25 years.  In addition to her tenure at Bloomfield, she has enjoyed stays at William Paterson University, Mountainside School of Nursing and Trinitas School of Nursing during her decorated career.

"Dr. Serra has done a tremendous job transforming our nursing division into one of the top departments in the state of New Jersey,” vice president for Academic Affairs Marion Terenzio said.  “The passion she brings to the profession can be felt throughout the department, and she is more than deserving of this recognition.  She makes a difference in the lives of our nursing students every single day, and I have no doubt she will continue to push our division forward."
