Selected for Verification?

Federal verification is a process which requires institutions to verify the accuracy of the information provided on a student’s FAFSA. If your FAFSA is selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education, be sure to complete the verification requirements as soon as possible, so that your eligibility for federal aid can be determined. The verification process must be completed by the last day of your enrollment during the school year for which your application has been selected.

How Will I Know That I Have Been Selected For Verification?

After submitting your FAFSA, you will receive an electronic Student Aid Report (SAR). If you have been selected for federal verification, this will be indicated on your SAR. "Your application has been selected for review in a process called verification. You must submit to your school signed copies of certain financial documents." Our office will notify of the exact items we need to complete verification. A missing information letter or email is produced a week after your financial aid is awarded. Coming Soon! All missing information items for financial aid will be displayed on your student Self-Serve Portal!

What Are the Required Documents?

If your FAFSA is selected for verification, you and your parent(s) must complete ONE of the following Verification Worksheet and Federal Tax Transcript.

Verification Worksheet: Only one form needs to be submitted. Our electronic combination will itemize what’s needed. For your convenience, the link to download the forms can be found here.

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows those who have filed their taxes to transfer data from their filed return and answers to certain questions on the FAFSA. This process saves time on FAFSA completion, reduces the chance for error, and can reduce the chance of being selected for federal verification. If you choose not to or are unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, but are selected for verification, you must order a copy of your tax transcript and send to the Student Financial Services. Steps to Obtain a Tax Return Transcript Online Choose “Get a Tax Transcript” from the www.irs.gov website.

The tax filer must sign-in with his/her social security number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code as it appears on the 2018 tax return. The Transcript will be mailed in 5-10 business days

How Do I Submit Additional Documentation Required For Verification?

There are times that we need to resolve conflicting information and may ask for additional information to be submitted. If you are required to submit additional documentation please stop by our office so that we can ensure document accuracy.
Verification is complete when we have reviewed all the required documentation, and the data in your financial aid application is accurate according to the documentation submitted.

If Required, How Will the Information Be Corrected?

Our office is required to submit all changes resulting from verification to the Federal Student Aid Processor (CPS). CPS then sends a revised electronic Student Aid Report (SAR) to the student. The revised SAR highlights the data that was changed and states that the changes were made by your school.

What Happens If I Do Not Complete Verification?

If you fail to submit verification documents, Bloomfield College would be unable to administer federal or state aid in your behalf, therefore, you would forfeit your aid. After verification is complete, any financial aid changes will be communicated to you via a new award letter.
