About the Program

Bloomfield College offers an Undergraduate Program in Elementary With Subject Matter Specialization that prepares you to teach students from diverse backgrounds, cultures and communities in preschool through eighth grade classrooms. If you want to have the option of teaching students at the middle school level or below, this is a program you should consider. You will learn about childhood development from early years through adolescence. You will also learn how to create enriched learning environments as well as how to plan and implement instruction from elementary through middle school years. You will develop curriculum units and lessons, which employ multiple intelligences and differentiated instructional techniques including how to embed instructional technology in your lessons as well as how to introduce children to the use of instructional technologies as they learn. You will also study ways to effectively collaborate with other educators and families to support students’ progress in schools.

As part of your preparation, you will have field experiences with preschool through middle school students throughout your program to help you reflect upon and apply what you are learning to real life practices in schools. Our small class sizes ensure close support and mentoring from our education faculty who have expertise in middle school, elementary and early childhood education, literacy development, technology and special education.

Program of Study:  The program of teacher preparation at Bloomfield College is based on a strong liberal arts foundation and preparation in a subject area major (known as a co-concentration). For the program in Elementary With Subject Matter Specialization, in addition to coursework in general liberal arts and a major in professional education, you will take coursework in one academic subject area or discipline that will strengthen your preparation in a specialized subject area to be taught at the elementary through middle school levels. You may select your co-concentration from one of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry (Physical Science), English, History, and Mathematics

Certifications:  Students who complete this program will be eligible for three teaching certificates that will qualify you to teach at the preschool through grade 8 levels depending on the New Jersey certification exam(s) taken and passed:

  • an initial teaching certificate as an early childhood teacher (preschool through grade 3)
  • an initial teaching certificate as an elementary teacher (kindergarten through grade 6)
  • an initial teaching certificate as a middle school teacher (grades 5 through 8)
