The foundation of this course will be based on theories of emergent reading and writing with attention to the influence of multicultural, second language, and family/community dynamics. With this foundational framework, students will learn about and experience what is involved in assessing and teaching children to read and communicate through writing and speaking from early childhood through high school. Students will develop knowledge of and skill in using effective teaching strategies and methods for developing the reading and writing skills of children in preschool through 12th grade. These skills will be developed through a review and synthesis of peer-reviewed, scientific-based reading research (SBRR) studies.
