Bloomfield College students Harriet Adu and Bianca Celi were among the nominees chosen for the New Jersey Distinguished Clinical Intern Award and attended the awards ceremony on June 22, 2016.

Adu, a post baccalaureate student studying elementary education at the College, completed her clinical experience in Spring 2016.  She student taught 5th grade at Jackson Academy in East Orange.  Her cooperating teacher was Ms. Pansy Le Blanc.

Celi, an early childhood education undergraduate student, completed her clinical experience in Fall of 2015 and graduated in May.  She student taught Kindergarten at Redwood School in West Orange.  Her cooperating teacher was Ms. Irene Fiory.

Since 1985, the Presidents of New Jersey's teacher preparation institutions have been invited to submit the dossiers of their most outstanding prospective teachers into competition for this award. This annual award publicly recognizes the year's 15 top graduates of educator preparation programs in New Jersey's colleges and universities.  An independent panel of esteemed New Jersey educators evaluates these dossiers to select the award recipients.

The ceremony was held at the Yvonne Theater on the campus of Rider University this year. Speakers at the event included Kristen Brown, Chief Talent Officer at the New Jersey Department of Education, and Tonya Breland, CEO/Speaker/Consultant for the Teach Educators & Scholars Organization.

Families of both women attended the special evening. Dr. Nora Krieger, Chair of the Education Division at the College, Mary Porcelli, Director of Clinical Experiences at the College, and college supervisors Robert Dunn and Joan Buzick were also in attendance to root on the College’s students.

Unfortunately, both Adu and Celi were not award winners, but they were recognized and received certificates.

“Our students were nominated after collaboration with their college supervisors and cooperating teachers because of the outstanding work they did during their clinical experience,” explained Porcelli. “They are both winners in our eyes.”
