The Scott H. Kaplan '02 Art Gallery at Bloomfield College will give patrons a glimpse into the works of one of New York’s most accomplished painters this spring, as the location will welcome “Colorscapes”, a solo exhibition of paintings by Linda Hiwot, for a ten-week stay in the on-campus space.

Hiwot will make a special appearance at the exhibit’s opening, which will showcase her work in one of the signature buildings on Bloomfield’s 11-acre campus.

"All of the exhibits that are brought to the Gallery are consistent with its mission, which is to present ideas through art that compliment the rich liberal arts curriculum that exists at our College," gallery Curator Halima Taha said. “In keeping with that mission, Linda Hiwot's work was chosen to introduce students to the concept of landscape in less literal forms. Hiwot's colorscapes provide organic abstractions of time and location that provoke self reflective thought.”

Beginning her professional career exhibiting at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Hiwot’s artistry spans 25 years, including exhibits in all corners of the world. Working in a courageous, personal idiom, her work (predominantly canvas paintings) is noted for its approach to color, shape and composition and often makes use of collage and other methods.

The subject matter in her art is autobiographical, mystical and mythical. Operating in the world of the imaginary, Hiwot’s work applies itself to the realm of natural unspoiled worlds, the cosmos, and the relationship between man and nature while suggesting a deeply conscious and feminine understanding of humanity.

The free exhibit will officially open at 5 p.m. on March 19, and will be on view through May 10. The Scott H. Kaplan '02 Art Gallery is on the second floor of the Bloomfield College Library, located at the corner of Liberty Street and Oakland Avenue in Bloomfield, N.J. For more information, contact Halima Taha via email at halima_taha@bloomfield.edu.
