Bloomfield College Athletics will have a new look this fall, extending the school’s era of growth into the world of college sports.

The private, liberal arts institution has unveiled a new logo for the 2014-2015 academic year and will now be known as the Bloomfield College Bears, the College announced Aug. 25.

The announcement comes on the heels of the school completing construction on a new 84,000-square-foot residence hall at the corner of Broad and Franklin streets in historic Bloomfield Center, beginning a period of tremendous expansion for one of New Jersey’s oldest higher education institutions.

“Our new logo and mascot reflect our desire to preserve the tradition of this 150-year-old College while, at the same, bringing fresh, new perspectives to the spirit and mission we share as educators and students,” said Bloomfield President Richard Levao.

A secondary crest displaying the College’s initials, and a tertiary mark displaying a bear paw will accompany the licensed, trademarked logo as part of the rebranding effort. To further enhance the guest experience at campus events and athletics contests, the institution will also reveal a corresponding mascot character that will be available for appearances within the local community.

A family-friendly version of the primary logo, the Bear character will be named "Deacon", a nod to the College’s Presbyterian roots and the school’s previous mascot. The character will make its public debut on the online show “The Jersey Sports Rant”, a new program highlighting New Jersey Sports that will be featured on Gannett Company (N.J.) websites for the Asbury Park Press (app.com), Courier Post (courierpostonline.com) Daily Record (dailyrecord.com), Daily Journal (dailyjournal.com) and the popular site mycentraljersey.com. The show will air live Monday-Thursday from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on each of the five sites simultaneously.

An NCAA Division II institution, Bloomfield fields teams in 10 intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s tennis.

“Our new logo is an exciting opportunity for our department, and opens up endless possibilities,” Director of Athletics Sheila Wooten said. “Our new look will give us a new future, while remembering our past. We will never forget our roots as Deacons, and hopefully this will create a bridge between alumni, current and prospective students and give us all an exciting new identity.”
