Alumnus Carlos King ’09 Nominated For Grammy

Bloomfield College alumnus Carlos King ’09 is continuing the brilliant beginning to his professional career with another accolade this month, as the Los Angeles native has received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Traditional R&B Performance for his work recording and mixing on the popular song “As” by artists Marsha Ambrosius and Anthony Hamilton.

The honor marks the second career nomination for King, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bloomfield with a dual concentration in digital audio engineering and digital music production as part of the College’s music technology program. His first nomination, for the Best Urban Contemporary Album category, came in 2013 for his editing and engineering work on Fantasia’s album “Side Effects of You”.

“I feel very fortunate to have this type of success so soon,” King said of his most recent achievement. “I believe it shows the music technology program at Bloomfield College is teaching current industry practices by using the latest technology.”

Currently a lead engineer at Los Angeles-based Blackout Entertainment, Carlos has worked with some of the decade’s top-selling artists in all aspects of music production, from editing and engineering songs for Neyo and Ariana Grande to mixing records for Fantasia and Michelle Williams. Also creating work for ESPN, Red Bull and the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards, King credits his stay at Bloomfield College and his time in the music technology program with giving him the tools he needed to succeed after graduation.

“Bloomfield helped me write my story by giving me an opportunity to learn how to make music, with no prior experience,” said King. “The College had a huge impact on my life personally and professionally. It taught me how to be independent and also matured me as a person. Since I was not from the area - or even from the East Coast, for that matter -  I had to learn to live on my own by living in the college dorms. My senior year I even became a Resident Advisor, which taught me a lot about responsibility and time management."

An area of Bloomfield’s award-winning Division of Creative Arts & Technology, the institution’s music technology program offers both a concentration leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree and a minor track. Courses completed by students choosing either path include Digital Audio Engineering, Sound Design, Developing a Record Project and Music Industry Essentials.

“Professionally, Bloomfield taught specific skills that have helped me survive in the professional world. The professors at Bloomfield, such as Professor (Peter) Gordon, educated me in many things that I apply to my everyday routine. They taught me things such as music theory, music compositions, and modern recording/mixing techniques. Without the education I received at Bloomfield, I probably would have never learned such skills, and wouldn’t be the person I am today.”

The 57th Grammy Awards will air Sunday, Feb. 8 on CBS at 8 p.m. For more information on the awards, visit grammy.com. To learn more about Bloomfield’s Division of Creative Arts & Technology, visit http://bloomfield.edu/academics/degrees-programs/creative-arts-technology.
